Bread Upma is easy and quick Indian breakfast recipe. If you are bored of regular upma varieties, and want to give it a change by trying something different, this is for you.  This is South Indian style Bread Upma and also called as Masala Bread Upma. This is a very tasty and delicious breakfast that can be made in less than 20 minutes.


It is also a good snack and a delicious way to use up leftover bread. This recipe is vegan and vegetarian. You can use any type of bread to make this super delicious upma. White bread, Brown bread, multigrain grain bread, dinner rolls, gluten free anything and everything goes well, except the honey bread.

RECIPE FOR BREAD UPMA

Bread Upma

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 bread slices - brown or white bread
  • 1.5 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 6 spring curry leaves
  • 3/4 cup onion - chopped
  • 2 green chili - chopped
  • 2 tbsp cashews - chopped
  • 1/2 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 tomato - chopped
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • salt to taste
  • 4 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp coriander leaves - for garnish

PROCEDURE

  • heat a pan or skillet
  • toast the bread until crisp on both the sides
  • cut the bread slices in to small cubes and set aside
  • heat oil in the pan
  • add mustard seeds and allowed to splutter
  • add Urad Dal and saute for few seconds until it turns brown color
  • add curry leaves and saute well until it turn crisp
  • then, add chopped onion and green chilli
  • saute well until it turn transparent and slight brown
  • add ginger garlic paste and cashews
  • saute well until the raw smell goes off
  • now add chopped tomato
  • saute well until it turn mushy
  • then, add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, sugar and salt
  • mix well and cook for 1 minute until the raw smell goes off
  • add water and mix well
  • cover with lid and cook for 1-2 minute, the masala turns thick
  • next add bread cubes
  • toss well until bread is well coated with the masala
  • add lemon juice and garnish with coriander leaves
  • mix well and serve hot
  • Bread Upma taste delicious
  • you do not need any side dish for this upma


NOTES

  1. you can add finely chopped capsicums after the tomatoes are half cooked
  2. you can add boiled corn and peas to make even more healthy upma
  3. add lemon juice is totally optional
  4. adjust spice powders according to your taste

BREAD UPMA WITH STEP BY STEP

heat a Tawa and add bread slice


toast the bread until it turns crisp on both the sides


toast all the 3 bread slices


cut into small cubes and set aside


heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, allowed to splutter and then add  Urad Dal and saute for few seconds


add curry leaves and saute well until it turns crisp


add chopped onion and green chilli


saute well until it turns transparent


add ginger garlic paste and cashews


saute well until the raw smell goes off


add chopped tomato


saute well until it turn mushy


add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, salt and sugar


mix well and cook for 1 minute until the raw smell goes


add water and mix well


cover with lid and cook for 1-2 minute


masala turns thick


add bread cubes


toss well until bread is well coated with the masala


add lemon juice
