RECIPE FOR GREEN MOONG DAL CURRY

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 cup whole green moong dal
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 red chilli
  • 1 spring curry leaves
  • 1 large onion – finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 green chilli – chopped
  • 1 tomato – finely chopped
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1.5 tsp coriander powder
  • 3/4 tsp garam masala powder
  • 1/4 tsp cumin powder
  • salt to taste
  • 1.5 cup water
  • 1/2 cup thick coconut milk
  • 1/4 cup coriander leaves – chopped – for garnish

PROCEDURE

  • soak green moong dal in water 4 hours and then rinse the dal in water and set aside
  • heat oil in a pressure cooker 
  • temper with cumin seeds, red chilli and curry leaves
  • saute for few seconds
  • add finely chopped onion and saute well until translucent
  • add chopped green chilli and ginger garlic paste
  • saute well until the raw smell goes
  • add chopped tomato and saute well until it turns mushy
  • add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder and garam masala powder 
  • mix well and cook for 2 minutes until the raw smell of spices goes
  • add soaked green moong dal and mix well with the masalas and cook for another 2 minutes
  • add thick coconut milk, 1 cup water and salt
  • mix well and pressure cook the curry on medium flame for 3 whistle and then switch off the flame
  • once the pressure releases naturally, open the cooker and garnish with chopped coriander leaves
  • serve hot with chapathi or rice

NOTES

  • adjust spice level according to your taste
  • adding coconut milk is totally optional but it gives rich creamy taste
  • it goes well with rice too with a tsp of ghee on top

Green Moong Dal Curry With Step By Step Photo Recipe

soak green moong dal in water for 3-4 hours

heat oil in the pan and temper with cumin seeds, red chilli 

and curry leaves

add finely chopped onion

saute well until it turns translucent

add ginger garlic paste and green chilli

saute well until the raw smell goes

add tomato puree, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder and cumin powder

mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes or until the raw smell of spices goes

add soaked green moong dal

mix well and saute with the masalas for 2 minutes in medium heat

add thick coconut milk

add salt and water and then mix well

close with lid and pressure cook for 3 whistle and then 

switch off the flame

green moong dal is ready

garnish with chopped coriander leaves
