Rava Upma or Sooji Upma is one of the popular Indian Breakfast made with Rava/Sooji. Upma is a one pot breakfast recipe made with tempering ingredients. This can be served as evening snack also. Rava upma goes well with sugar, pickle, coconut chutney, sambar, mint chutney and peanut chutney. Follow my step-by-step photo recipe to prepare basic rava upma. RECIPE FOR RAVA UPMA

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 cup rava/sooji
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1/4 tsp hing/asafoetida
  • 1 spring curry leaves
  • 3 green chilli - slitted
  • 1/2 inch ginger - grated
  • 1 large onion - thinly sliced
  • salt as needed
  • 3 cup water

PROCEDURE
  • dry roast rava until it is hot to touch and keep aside
  • heat oil in a pan and temper with mustard seeds, urad dal and hing
  • now add curry leaves, green chillies and chopped ginger
  • saute for few seconds
  • add mustard seeds, urad dal and hing/asafoetida
  • saute till the dal turns golden brown
  • add curry leaves, slitted green chillies and grated ginger, saute well
  • add thinly sliced onion
  • saute until onion turns transparent
  • add salt and roasted rava
  • mix well
  • add water
  • mix well
  • cover and cook in low flame for 10 minutes (do not forgot to stir in between)
  • once all the water is absorbed, switch off the flame
  • delicious rava upma is ready
  • it goes well with coconut chutney, sambar, mint chutney, tomato chutney etc.,
  • Enjoy!





Basic Rava Upma with Step-by-
Step Photo Recipe


dry roast rava on low medium flame until it is hot to touch


heat oil in the pan and temper with mustard seeds, urad dal and hing


add curry leaves, green chillies and chopped ginger, 
saute for few seconds


add thinly sliced onion


saute well until it turns translucent


add roasted rava


mix well


add 3 cup water, salt and mix well


cook on high flame for 5 minutes


once the rava is absorbed all the water, cook on low flame 
for another 10 minutes


Rava Upma is ready to serve with coconut chutney and sambar
