WHEAT RAVA UPMA WITH STEP BY STEP PHOTO RECIPE

heat a tsp of oil in a pan, add 1 cup broken wheat rava

roast rava in medium flame for 2 minutes until you get nice aroma, once if you see the color changes, turn off the flame and set aside

heat oil in a heavy bottomed pan, temper with mustard seeds, urad dal, bengal gram dal, hing, curry leaves and slit green chillies. saute for 1 minute till dal color changes

add 1 large thinly sliced onions and chopped ginger

saute for 2 minutes until onion turns translucent

add chopped carrot and peas ( you can add your favorite veggies)

continue to saute for 2-3 minutes in medium flame

once veggies cooked thoroughly, add roasted broken wheat rava

continue to roast wheat rava with cooked veggies for 2-3 minutes

add salt and pour water, ratio is 1:3. so, add 3 cups of water, and mix all thoroughly

let it boil in high flame until the water content reduces and the mixture turns like porridge consistency

now simmer the flame to low and cook covered for 10 minutes or till all the water is absorbed and you get a soft upma

3 tbsp oil
1 cup wheat rava
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp urad dal
1 tsp bengal gram dal
1/4 tsp hing
1 spring curry leaves
1 tbsp ginger – chopped
3 green chillies – slit
1 large onion – thinly sliced
1/2 cup carrot – chopped
1/2 cup peas
salt – to taste
3 cup water
Directions
- first fry the rava in medium flame for 2 minutes with a teaspoon of oil if its not roasted rava. I love the aroma
- heat oil in a heavy bottomed pan, and temper with mustard seeds, urad dal and chana dal. let lentils turn golden crisp
- add the curry leaves, slit green chillies and chopped ginger. saute for few seconds and followed by add thinly sliced onion and fry till onion just turns translucent
- now add the veggies ( I chose chopped carrot and peas ) and fry for 2-3 minutes in medium low flame.
- once veggies cooked well, add roasted wheat rava and mix with sautéed masala for 1-2 minute
- pour water and add salt. combine well and let it boil in high flame until the water content reduces and the mixture turns like porridge consistency
- now simmer the flame to low and cook covered for 10 minutes or till all the water is absorbed and you get a soft upma
- you can add a teaspoon of ghee at end for a unique flavor
Notes
- roast the wheat rava lightly to enhance its flavor and texture
- use the right ration of water to wheat rava to achieve the perfect consistency
