 GOKULASHTAMI RECIPES

Krishna Gokulashtami, occasion of the birth of Krishna, also known as Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is an annual Hindu festival celebrates the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. 

According to the Hindu calendar, it is observed on the eighth tithi (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in Bhadrapada Masa. 

Janmashtami 2022 Date, Time and Significance

Janmashtami date varies every year according to Hindu Panchang. This year, Krishna Janmashtami 2022 will observed on 19th Friday August. As per Hindu calendar, this year, and 5249th Birth Anniversary of Lord Krishna will be celebrated.

Most of the time, there are two consecutive dates of Krishna Janmashtami mentioned in the Hindu panchang. The first date is for Smarta Sampradaya and the second one is for Vaishnava Sampradaya. (18th and 19th of August).

Fasting Rules

Lord Krishna devotees keep fast on the day of Krishna Janmashtami. As per Janmashtami fasting rules, one should have only a single meal a day before Janmashtami. On fasting day, devotees keep day-long fast and break it on the next day. Assess your health condition before observing the vrat. 
  • rise early and take a bath
  • wear fresh or clean clothes
  • offer your prayers to the Sun God facing East
  • take a pledge that you will sincerely keep the vrat
  • keep chanting the name of Shri Krishna
  • maintain celibacy
  • donate food to the needy
  • feed a cow or a calf
  • on the day of janmashtami, do not pluck Tulsi leaves from the plant
  • do not smoke or consume alcohol
What To Eat and What Not to Eat
  • have fruits, milk and water
  • keep yourself hydrated by drinking water or juices or coconut water
  • do not consume rice, wheat or lentils
  • do not consume onion or garlic
  • do not eat meat, egg or fish
