Sweet pongal, also known as sakkarai pongal or chakkara pongal, is often made as a prasadam for various festivals in South India. It is a sweet dish that is traditionally prepared in south india for the makar sankranti.  You can easily make this mouth-watering dessert recipe at home with simple ingredients.

INGREDIENTS:
  • 1/2 cup raw rice
  • 1/4 cup moong dal
  • 1 cup jaggery
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 tbsp cashew nuts
  • 2 tbsp raisin
  • 1/4 tsp cardamom powder
  • 1/4 - 1/2 cup ghee
PROCEDURE
  • heat a pan and add rice
  • dry roast until it is hot to touch
  • remove the rice from the pan and transfer it into pot
  • now add moong dal and dry roast until it is hot to touch
  • remove the dal from the pan and transfer it into rice pot
  • wash 3 times in cold running water and drain the water
  • add 3 cups of water and salt
  • pressure cook rice and dal together  for 5 whistles
  • once the pressure releases naturally, open the cooker
  • mash the dal and rice together with potato masher and keep it aside
  • heat 1/4 cup of water in a pan
  • add jaggery 
  • when it dissolves, filter it to remove impurities.
  • boil jaggery water with a tsp of ghee on medium heat.
  • add mashed rice and dal 
  • combine altogether
  • cook for few minutes until everything gets blended well
  • add a tbsp of ghee
  • add cardamom powder
  • fry cashew nuts in a tsp of ghee
  • fry raisins in a tsp of ghee until they puff up
  • add it to the rice dal mixture along with ghee
  • add the remaining ghee
  • cook for few minutes on low heat until everything gets blended well.
  • serve hot
  • enjoy delicious sweet pongal !!
