Dal Tadka Recipe – One of the most popular dal recipe in North Indian cuisine, which is prepared by adding a tadka on top the dal. This is an all time favorite recipe for many women’s and is very easy to make. 

Dal tadka means spiced lentils, which is very flavorful, tasty, healthy and loaded with lots of nutrients. Dal tadka needs less time for preparation and it can be made in less than 30 minutes.

Dal tadka isn’t too thin or too thick usually has a medium consistency. It usually serves with chapathi, roti, jeera rice, steamed rice or naan. You can also pack this tasty and healthy dal tadka for lunchbox and also serve this has main course on special events. Follow my step by step photo recipe to prepare Dal Tadka. RECIPE FOR DAL TADKA

Dal tadka

INGREDIENTS

For Dal

  • 1 cup toor dal
  • 1/2 cup onion – chopped
  • 2 green chili – chopped
  • 1 large tomato – chopped
  • 1/2 tsp ginger – chopped
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/8 tsp hing (asafoetida)
  • salt to taste 
  • 2.5 cup water
  • 1 tbsp cream – low fat cream
  • 2 tbsp coriander leaves – chopped

For Tadka

  • 3 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 5 garlic – chopped
  • 3 red chilli
  • 1/8 tsp hing (asafoetida)
  • 1 tsp kasoori methi – crushed
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tbsp coriander leaves – chopped
  • piece of charcoal and melted ghee, for dhungar method – optional

PROCEDURE

  • soak toor dal in water for 30 minutes
  • to the dal, add chopped onion, tomato, green chilli, ginger, turmeric powder, Garam Masala powder, hing and water
  • mix well
  • pressure cook for 5-6 whistle
  • once the pressure subsides down naturally, open the cooker and then mash the cooked dal with a spoon or whisk (the consistency of the dal should be little thin, not too thin, if it looks thick, add some water and cook for 3-4 minutes, should be medium consistency)
  • add fresh cream and chopped coriander leaves
  • mix well
  • Dal is ready and keep aside
  • for tadka, heat ghee in a pan
  • add cumin seeds and allowed to crackle them
  • add red chillies and chopped garlic
  • saute for few seconds, let the garlic turn slight brown and the red chilies changes color
  • finally add kasoori methi, hing and red chilli powder
  • mix well and switch off the heat
  • transfer the tempered ingredients into the cooked dal
  • mix well
  • serve Dal Tadka with jeera rice, steamed rice or with Chapathi or roti
  • Enjoy !

NOTES

  1. you can choose any dal with yellow in color to make this recipe, toor dal, moong dal or masoor dal or you add an equal mix of toor dal and moong dal or toor dal with masoor dal
  2. soak the dal for minimum 30 minutes for creamy and delicious recipe
  3. dhungar method is totally optional, if you don’t have charcoal skip it

Step by Step Photo Recipe

take 1 cup toor dal

wash and soak the dal in water for 30 minutes

to the dal, add chopped onion, tomato, green chilli, ginger, hing, turmeric powder, Garam Masala powder, hing and salt

mix well and place the bowl in inside the pressure cooker

pressure cook for 5-6 whistle

dal cooked well

mash the dal well with a whisk or with a spoon

add cream and chopped coriander leaves

mix well

transfer into serving bowl

heat ghee in a pan

temper with cumin seeds

add chopped garlic and red chilli and saute for few seconds

add hing, red chilli powder and kasoori methi, mix well

transfer the tempered ingredients into the cooked dal

garnish  with coriander leaves, serve Dal Tadka with chapathi, jeera rice or naan
