heat oil in a heavy bottomed pan, add bengal gram dal

roast the lentils until they turn golden brown

now add roughly chopped onions, green chillies, tamarind and garlic

continue to saute well until onion turns translucent. cook until the mixture is well combined

transfer the sautéed mixture into the mixer jar

blend this mixture to the desired consistency, either smooth or chunky

add salt as needed

blend this mixture well into a smooth consistency

transfer onion chutney into the serving bowl

now for the seasoning, heat sesame oil in the pan and temper with mustard seeds, urad dal, hing and curry leaves

pour the seasoning over the chutney and mix well

onion chutney is ready to serve with idli and dosa

Ingredients

  • 2 tsp oil

  • 7 green chillies

  • 4 garlic

  • 1 inch tamarind

  • 2 large onion

  • 2 tsp roasted chana dal

  • salt – to taste

  • FOR SEASONING
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds

  • 1 tsp urad dal

  • 1/4 tsp hing

  • 1 spring curry leaves

Directions
