Idiyappam is a traditional breakfast recipe in Kerala and Tamilnadu. Idiyappam is also called as string hopper / noolappam / noolputtu. This recipe is made of idiyappam flour or rice flour and it is one of the very healthy breakfast recipe as it is steam cooked. It is also served during dinner time. Idiyappam is usually served with a variety of side dishes like vegetable kurma, chicken curry, kadala curry etc., In Tamil Nadu, the popular way to serve idiyappam with ghee, grated coconut and sugar or with sweetened coconut milk. This combination is popular among children. This recipe is pretty simple to prepare and the key is to get the right consistency of the dough. Follow my step-by-step photo recipe to prepare Idiyappam. RECIPE FOR IDIYAPPAM | STRING HOPPER

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 cup idiyappam flour 
  • 2 cup water or more
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp oil
PROCEDURE
  • boil water well
  • in a mixing bowl, add idiyappam flour, salt and oil
  • add the boiling water little by little to the idiyappam flour
  • make a soft and smooth dough
  • knead well 
  • grease the idiyappam maker with oil
  • fill it with the prepared dough
  • apply little oil on the idli plate or idiyappam plate
  • now press the idiyappam maker in a circular motion on idli plate
  • place the idli plate in the idli pot for steaming
  • steam it for 10 minutes and remove from the idli pot
  • the basic idiyappam is ready
  • serve hot with coconut, sugar, kadala curry or vegetable kurma


Soft Idiyappam with Step-By-Step Photo Recipe


in a mixing bowl add idiyappam flour


add salt


add oil


boil water well


add boiling water little by little to the idiyappam flour


mix well and make a soft and smooth dough


grease idiyappam maker with little oil


pinch a small amount of dough


fill the dough in the idiyappam maker


grease a tsp of oil in the idli plate


press the idiyappam maker in a circular motion on idli plate


place the idli plate in the idli pot 


steam for 10 minutes
