Homemade black bean burger recipe is healthier, tastier and delicious burger with a black bean patty with few simple ingredients. Finding alternatives to meat can be hard, but these burgers really nail it! so earthy and satisfying to eat.

These black bean burgers are much healthier and packed with high fiber content, vitamins and minerals, and also it has low in fat and cholesterol compared to any other vegetarian or non-vegetarian burgers (hamburger, beef burger, chicken burgers, etc.,)

Options for Black Bean Patties - There are lots of options for black bean patties and easy way to find the healthy ingredients, add boiled corn, flax seed powder, quick cooking oats, cooked brown rice, mushrooms, carrots and no need to add eggs to make patties. 

Patties Cooking Options - You have 4 cooking options for patties

1. oven baked - preheat oven to 350 degree Fahrenheit, place the patties in the parchment paper and drizzle with a tsp of oil and bake for 20 minutes on both the sides.

2. Grilled - these burgers grill well too without the burgers falling apart (just freeze the burgers before grilling)

3. Air Fry - place the patties in the basket and air fry for 12-15 minutes in the air fryer and brush with a tsp of oil before serving on the bread

4. Stove top - heat oil in the pan and cook until light golden brown on both the sides. These burgers are fit and firm.

RECIPE FOR HOMEMADE 

BLACK BEAN BURGER

INGREDIENTS

For Patties

  • 2 cup black beans
  • 1/2 cup onion - finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup green capsicum - finely chopped
  • 2 green chili - chopped
  • 1 tbsp garlic - chopped
  • 1.5 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1.5 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp pepper powder
  • 1/2 cup coriander leaves (cilantro) - chopped
  • 3/4 cup bread crumbs
  • salt to taste
  • oil - for shallow fry
Accompaniments
  • burger buns - as needed
  • lettuce leaves - as needed
  • 1 onion - cut into thin round slices
  • 1 tomato - cut into thin round slices
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter - to toast the buns
  • tomato ketchup - optional

PROCEDURE

  • soak black beans in enough water for 6-8 hours
  • drain the water and add black beans in pressure cooker
  • add 6 cups of fresh water and pressure cook for 6-7 whistle, then switch off the flame
  • once the pressure subsides down naturally open the cooker
  • mash the cooked black beans well with potato masher
  • transfer the beans into the mixing bowl
  • add finely chopped onion, capsicum, coriander leaves, green chilli, garlic, red chilli powder, cumin powder, pepper powder, salt and bread crumbs
  • mix well and set the mixture aside for 5-10 minutes so that bread crumbs will absorb any excess moisture in the mixture
  • divide the mixture into 9 equal portions and make a round patty, make the patties same size as your burger buns
  • patties should be firm and fit so that it does not fall apart
  • heat a cast iron pan
  • add 1 tbsp oil, place one patty and cook the patty on low medium flame for 3 minutes
  • flip over to other side and cook evenly for another 3 minutes, make all the patties like this
  • black bean burger patties are ready
  • Making Burger : toast the buns in a tbsp of unsalted butter, place the cooked patty in one slice, then lettuce, round onion and tomato, now cover with another slice of bun
  • drizzle with tomato ketchup
  • black bean burger is ready to serve
  • serve hot

NOTES

  • to freeze, place prepared (uncooked) patties on a parchment paper and place in freezer for up to 3 months.
  • to cook frozen burgers, allow to thaw the patties at room temperature for 1 hour before cooking
  • you can also bake the patties in the oven, spray the patty with olive oil, at 350 degree F for 20 minutes and don't use microwave, it will become floppy
  • if you don't have coriander leaves (cilantro) substitute with parsley
  • for toppings you can also use mayonnaise, avocado slices, cheddar cheese or jalapenos, very tasty

soak black beans in enough water for 8 hours


add soaked beans in pressure cooker


add 6 cup water


pressure cook for 7 whistle

mash well with potato masher


mashed beans ready


add into the mixing bowl


add chopped onion, capsicum, garlic, green chili, red chilli powder, cumin powder, salt and pepper powder


mix well


add chopped coriander leaves and bread crumbs


mix well (it will be slightly sticky) - rest the mixture for 10 minutes, it will absorb more water


pinch a small dough from the mixture and make a round patty


patties should be firm and fit so that it does not fall apart


heat a tbsp of oil in the cast iron pan, place 1 patty


cook on one side for 3 minutes and flip over to other side and cook for another 3 minutes on low medium flame


toast the buns with a tbsp of unsalted butter


place prepared (cooked) patty on one bun
