Peas Pulao or Matar Pulao is a quick, filling, one pot rice made with green peas, basmati rice, onions and whole spices in a pressure cooker. It goes well with raitha and chips or any other chicken or paneer recipes. This peas pulao can be made in under 30 minutes and it's vegan and gluten free. INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 3 cloves
  • 2 inch cinnamon stick
  • 2 cardamom pods
  • 1 star anise
  • 2 bay leaf
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 large onion - thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
  • 3 green chilli - slit
  • 1/4 cup mint leaves
  • 1 cup peas - fresh / frozen
  • 2 cup water
  • salt to taste

PROCEDURE

  • rinse and soak basmati rice in water for 30 minutes
  • heat ghee and oil in a pressure cooker
  • temper with cloves, cinnamon stick, bay leaf, cardamom pods, star anise and cumin seeds
  • saute for few seconds
  • add thinly sliced onion and saute well until it turns translucent
  • add ginger garlic paste, green chillies and mint leaves
  • saute well until the raw smell goes
  • add fresh or frozen peas
  • mix well and saute for 2 minutes in low medium flame
  • add 2 cup water and salt
  • mix well
  • bring water to boil
  • once water starts to boil, add soaked basmati rice and mix well
  • close the cooker with lid and put the weight on
  • cook on medium flame until the 1st whistle and then cook on very low flame for another 20 minutes and then switch off the flame
  • rest the cooker for 10 minutes before opening 
  • mix well and serve hot with onion raitha or chips
NOTES
  • add veggies of your choice to make more nutritious
  • adjust green chillies as per your taste
  • if you dont have basmati rice, replace with regular sona masoori rice

Green Peas Pulao With Step By Step

soak basmati rice in water for 30 minutes

heat ghee and oil in a pressure cooker, temper with cloves, cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, bay leaf, star anise and cumin seeds


saute for few seconds


add finely chopped onion and saute well until translucent


add ginger garlic paste, green chilli and mint leaves


saute well until the raw smell goes


add 1 cup fresh or frozen peas


mix well and cook for 2 minutes


add 2 cup water and salt, mix well


bring water to boil


add soaked basmati rice and mix well


close with lid and put the weight on. cook on medium flame until 1st whistle, then cook on very low flame for 20 minutes and then switch off the flame

serve hot with onion raitha and chips
