Semiya upma or Vermicelli Upma is one of the popular Indian Breakfast made with Vermicelli. Upma is a one pot breakfast dish made with tempering ingredients. It can be made of rava, vermicelli, poha, sabudana, oats and millets. This can be served as evening snack also. Semiya upma goes well with sugar, pickle, peanut chutney, tomato chutney and coconut chutney. To make this semiya upma, i have used bambino roasted semiya. RECIPE FOR VERMICELLI UPMA | SEMIYA UPMA

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup vermicelli 
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 tsp oil to cook vermicelli
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seed
  • 1/2 tsp hing | asafoetida
  • 1 spring curry leaves
  • 3 green chillies – slitted
  • 1 inch ginger – crushed
  • 1 medium size onion – thinly sliced
  • salt as needed

PROCEDURE

  • take vermicelli in a sauce pot, add 3 cups of water with a tsp of oil
  • mix well
  • cook vermicelli in medium flame
  • once 3/4 vermicelli cooked, drain the water completely and keep it aside
  • heat oil in a wok
  • add mustard seeds, urad dal, hing, curry leaves, green chillies and crushed ginger
  • saute for a while
  • add thinly sliced onion
  • saute onion till they turn translucent
  • add salt 
  • mix well
  • add 3/4th cooked vermicelli
  • combine well with the seasonings
  • cover and cook in low flame for 10 minutes
  • serve hot with coconut chutney or any chutney of your choice


Vermicelli Upma Step-by-Step Photo Recipe

take vermicelli in a sauce pan

add 3 cup of water

add a tsp of oil and cook in medium flame

once 3/4th cooked

drain the water and keep it aside

heat oil in a wok

add mustard seeds, urad dal, hing and cumin seeds

add curry leaves

add slitted green chillies

add crushed ginger, saute well

add thinly sliced onion

saute till they turn translucent

add salt and mix well

add 3/4 cooked vermicelli

combine well

cover and cook in low flame for 10 minutes

vermicelli upma ready

serve hot with coconut chutney
